Monday, May 29 - Oddness, or Little Differences

So, this evening I'm walking briskly to my dance lesson (I was late), and as I approach this older man (say 60 years) on the sidewalk, he turns to face me and sticks his hand out as to shake hands...'Kind of a "put it here!" gesture. I stop, shake hands with him, and continue on my way with a short chuckle to myself. He chuckles to himself and says something to his friend, who I'm guessing was as confused as I was over the whole thing. I have no idea what that was all about.

Also, on two different occasions in the past week I've been sitting by myself (once at dinner, another time drinking a coffee) and had the person next to me lean over and start up a conversation with me. All I can figure is that it's for the novelty of it and they just want to speak English with a native English speaker. The first guy could carry on a conversation of sorts, but he was a kid and his dialogue was unfortunately short-lived with questions like "Do you like sports?", which most of you know I'm a complete moron with, and "What bands do you like?", to which my response is basically "Lots of obscure stuff that you've probably never heard of". Don't get me wrong. That's only what I thought, not what I said. I wasn't being totally presumptuous. But based on the fact that he carried a photo of Kurt Cobain (probably spelled wrong here) in his daytimer, I don't think we'd have much in common to talk about, musically speaking. I'm afraid that the last guy really couldn't get past "I'm studying English". He was trying to get something across, but with no success at all. Now, I know what you're thinking, and I'll say that I don't think he was trying to pick me up.

Now if only some beautiful woman would feel so inclined to strike up a conversation...

I'm convinced that there's a conspiracy against me getting this digital camera. After ordering one from Egghead.com, in spite of their notice that the item was in stock, I've been back-ordered, with no estimate as to when I should expect delivery. However, they ***are*** nice enough to cancel any orders after they've been back ordered for 30 days (how considerate!). The moral is not to trust the "in stock" status on the Egghead.com website. By this time, they might even have one at Capitol Camera, so I've got a feeler in there to see what I can come up with. Anybody want to hand-deliver a camera from Austin to Japan? (That's an invitation to visit, not an offer to pay air fare...although I might be able to get a good deal through the Universal travel folks.)

It's too bad about the camera, too. Tonight the weather is the clearest that I've seen it, and the view is spectacular. I can even see lights on some of the distant hilltops.

'Signing off for now. 'Hope everyone's doing great.
